Preliminary results are reported in 12-24 hours. The health care provider will be notified of positive cultures. Negative cultures are reported after 6 weeks.

Specimen Requirements
Please contact the laboratory at 936-6877 for smear only or culture only requests. Aseptically collect scrapings or biopsy of skin or lesions, surgical specimens. DO NOT SEND SWABS. The portion of the surgical specimen submitted to the Microbiology Laboratory should be separated from the portion submitted to the Pathology Department by the surgeon utilizing sterile technique. Rejection criteria: include insufficient specimen volume, specimen contamination of container, specimen sent on swab, desiccated specimen. Do not incubate. May be refrigerated. For optimum recovery, send directly to the Microbiology Laboratory. If specimen must be stored, refrigerate immediately after specimen collection. May be refrigerated up to 24 hours.
