Specimen Requirements

Collection Onsite

Please contact the laboratory at 936-6877 for smear only or culture only requests. Collect specimen following sterile preparation of aspiration site.Indicate current antibiotic therapy and clinical diagnosis. Rejection criteria: specimen sent on swab. Do not incubate. May be refrigerated. For optimum recovery, send directly to the Microbiology Laboratory. If specimen must be stored, refrigerate immediately after specimen collection. May be refrigerated up to 24 hours.

Collection Offsite

Collect specimen following sterile preparation of aspiration site. For optimum recovery, send directly to MLabs. If specimen must be stored, refrigerate immediately after specimen collection. Do not incubate. May be refrigerated up to 24 hrs. Do not send swabs. Indicate specimen source, collection date/time, current antibiotic therapy and clinical diagnosis on requisition. If an unacceptable specimen is received, the client will be notified before disposal of the original specimen.
