Preliminary results are reported in 18-24 hours. The health care provider will be notified when culture becomes positive with possible Pseudomonas, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Bacillus cereus, Group A beta streptococcus, Staphylococcus aureus, yeast, or molds. Negative cultures are reported after 3 days.

Specimen Requirements
Cleanse skin around eye with mild antiseptic. Specimen type: eye swab, corneal scrapings, conjunctiva, donor cornea. Collect the specimen by swabbing. Pass swab moistened with preservative-free saline 2 times over lower conjunctiva. Avoid eyelid border and lashes. Scrapings: use local anesthetic and platinum spatula. Scraping should be done by ophthalmologist. (OD = right eye, OS = left eye). If orbital cellulitis is suspected, write "cellulitis" on the requisition.
