Diagnostic Services Overview

Pathology is the foundation that drives medical care and the University of Michigan Department of Pathology has provided laboratory service distinguished by excellence since 1956. 

Michigan Medicine Laboratories (MLabs), established in 1985, is the Department of Pathology's Reference Laboratory Division. MLabs functions as a portal to provide pathologists, community hospitals, large health systems and other reference laboratories access to the faculty, staff, and laboratories of the University of Michigan Department of Pathology. We have a large and diverse faculty and staff with 130 faculty representing all disciplines of Pathology, 800 laboratory, administrative and research staff, as well as 48 residents and fellows. We are committed to safety, quality and service so that we meet the diagnostic needs of our clients and the patients we serve. 

MLabs offers a full range of diagnostic services including professional consultative services by our faculty. A full range of anatomic pathology diagnostic services are available in the Division of Anatomic Pathology. State of the art technology and active research programs assure that the most sophisticated diagnostic technologies are available. MLabs Clinical Pathology Laboratories provide a comprehensive test menu with 24 hours per day, seven days a week service with a focus on doing the right test at the right time. Our laboratories include Blood Bank and Transfusion, Chemical Pathology, Coagulation, Cytogenetics, Drug Analysis and Toxicology, Flow Cytometry, Hematology, Histocompatability, Immunology, Microbiology and Virology, and Molecular Diagnostics.
