Mayo Clinic Laboratories will discontinue their HSV Culture from Neonates assay effective December 20, 2023. Molecular methods offer improved sensitivity and faster turnaround time. The following tests are recommended to assist in the evaluation of cases of suspected HSV neonatal infection:

 

• HSV DNA by PCR, Qualitative, Swab, Neonatal (order code NPHSV) for patients <3 days old without the presence of lesions.
• HSV DNA by PCR, Qualitative, Swab (order code PHSV) for patients >3 days old without lesions (neonatal surface swab) or at any age with visible lesions from anogenital, skin, or oral mucosa. 
• HSV DNA by PCR, Qualitative, CSF (order code PCRHS)
• HSV DNA by PCR, Qualitative, Blood (order code HSVPB) (Mayo HSVPB)
